Vaginal Itching Q & A

What causes vaginal itching?

Vaginitis is one of the most common causes of vaginal itching. With this condition, your vagina becomes inflamed due to a bacterial, viral, or yeast infection. Vaginitis can lead to vaginal irritation and pain during intercourse. These symptoms -- itching, irritation, and painful sex -- can also be caused by the vaginal atrophy that occurs during menopause.

What is vaginal atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy, also called genitourinary syndrome of menopause, is a condition that occurs when levels of estrogen drop during menopause or after surgical removal of your ovaries. Estrogen maintains vaginal health by keeping tissues elastic, promoting lubrication, and ensuring the proper level of acidity.

Without estrogen, the lining of the vagina becomes drier, thinner, and less elastic. Vaginal secretions diminish and the vagina becomes less acidic. As a result of these changes, you may develop vaginal itching, vaginal dryness and irritation, and painful intercourse.

What is the MonaLisa Touch?

The MonaLisa Touch is a medical device that combines unique technology with a fractional CO2 laser. The technology used in the MonaLisa Touch applies laser energy in tiny dots and to a precise degree of penetration, while controlling the temperature. As a result, tissue regeneration is achieved without side effects or pain during the treatment.

How does the MonaLisa Touch treat vaginal itching?

Gentle heat from the laser triggers the growth of collagen, which is essential for strength and tone in vaginal tissues. Along with collagen synthesis, the treatment restores normal blood supply and increases the production of hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally holds water.

As these changes occur, the tone and texture of the vaginal lining are restored and a normal pH (acidity) is achieved. Tissues inside the vagina become thicker and less prone to infection. The overall effect restores balance, improves vaginal health, and eliminates vaginal atrophy and itching.

What can you expect during and after the procedure?

Before the procedure, your doctor performs a thorough examination to rule out vaginal infections or any other underlying cause of your vaginal itching. She also takes time to explain the procedure and to answer any questions you may have.

The MonaLisa device is inserted into your vagina, and the laser treatment begins. The procedure doesn’t require anesthesia and the process is quick -- it only takes about five minutes. You can return to your normal activities after the procedure, but you’ll need to avoid sex for a few days so the tissues can heal.
